Escalator Side Brushes: Purpose & Replacement Guide

By Brushcustom Technical Team

Escalator side brushes, also called escalator safety brushes or skirt brushes, run along the lower edge of the side panels beside the moving steps. Their purpose is to create a visible and tactile boundary that encourages passengers to keep footwear, clothing, and loose items away from the side clearance area. They are not shoe-cleaning brushes and do not replace the escalator manufacturer's safety instructions, inspection, or maintenance procedures.

What an Escalator Side Brush Does

The brush presents a flexible contact edge along the skirt panel. When a passenger's shoe or clothing moves too close to the side, the brush is intended to provide an early physical reminder before the person reaches the more critical clearance area. The brush also covers part of the visual gap between the skirt panel and step path.

Because the assembly is installed in a passenger-facing location, replacement projects should match the approved escalator design and mounting arrangement. A replacement brush should never be selected only by a similar-looking photograph.

Typical Strip-Brush Construction

Most escalator side brushes are a custom strip-brush assembly: dense filament is retained in a continuous backing and the backing is fitted into a defined holder, channel, or mounting rail. The visible brush section may be supplied straight or cut to the required length for the escalator model.

  • Backing and mounting profile: must match the existing rail, holder, or approved drawing.
  • Filament: selected for the required contact feel, wear performance, colour, and project material specification.
  • Trim height: set so the brush reaches the intended boundary without interfering with steps or panels.
  • Length and end treatment: prepared for the actual installation sections and joining details.

Where the existing brush uses a metal-channel construction, see custom metal channel strip brushes. For a profile that must follow a non-straight path, the mounting and bend requirement should be shown on the drawing before a flexible construction is considered.

What to Provide for a Replacement or OEM Quote

Send the approved drawing or the original brush specification with the escalator model, mounting profile, overall lengths, brush trim height, joining or end details, required colour, and any stated material or test requirement. Clear dimensions and the mounting cross-section are more useful than a general product name.

Brushcustom supports drawing-based custom production for OEM and large-volume replacement orders. The final profile, filament, length, and retention construction are made to the approved drawing rather than assumed from a standard strip brush.

Maintenance Note

Replace a side brush when it is visibly worn, damaged, loose in the holder, or no longer follows the approved position. Escalator safety parts should be inspected and replaced through the equipment owner's approved maintenance process. Do not treat a brush replacement as a substitute for servicing the skirt panel, steps, comb plate, or safety devices.
