What Is an Industrial Honing Brush?

An industrial honing brush uses a flexible working structure with abrasive contact points. Depending on the construction, abrasive globules are carried in flexible nylon filaments or arranged on a flexible honing body.

The brush follows the bore while applying a controlled abrasive action; final performance depends on the workpiece, bore size, finish target, and operating process.

Industrial honing brush abrasive grit range for bore finishing

Honing Brush Formats We Can Manufacture

Flexible ball and flex hone brush for cylindrical bore finishing

Flexible ball / flex hone brushes

Flexible abrasive globules for cylindrical bore finishing and edge blending. Suitable for selected engine, hydraulic, valve, brake, and machined-part bores.

Cylinder hone brush for engine and machined cylindrical bores

Engine and cylinder hone brushes

Bore diameter, working length, core or stem, abrasive, and grit are defined for the cylinder application. Working lengths of 150–500 mm and diameters of 3.2–271 mm or custom can be reviewed for cylinder builds; the exact range follows the selected construction.

Large-diameter industrial honing brush for cylindrical surfaces

Small- and large-diameter honing brushes

Small-diameter formats provide access to restricted bores; large-diameter formats support larger cylindrical surfaces. Final diameter, trim, length, and fit are made to the approved drawing.

Abrasive and Filament Options

Select the abrasive system, grit, and flexible filament construction against the workpiece and required finish rather than treating one specification as universal.

Silicon carbide and aluminum oxide abrasive honing brush options

Silicon carbide abrasive (SiC / SC)

Common grit options are #60, #120, #180, #240, #320, and #600. Finer grades up to #1200 can be specified for selected cylinder builds. Final grit is selected for the workpiece and finish requirement.

Aluminum oxide abrasive (AO)

An alternative abrasive for finishing and edge conditioning. Abrasive grade, grit, filament construction, and working diameter are confirmed for the specific part rather than treated as one fixed standard.

Flexible nylon abrasive filaments

Flexible nylon filaments can carry the abrasive contact points in a ball-style or flex-hone construction. Filament diameter, fill density, trim, and retention detail follow the approved design.

Honing brush core, stem, diameter, length, and abrasive details for custom production

Core, Stem, and Custom Dimensions

Confirm the fit and finishing target from the drawing, measured part, or sample before production.

  • Working diameter / bore fit: Typical selected constructions cover 3.5–260 mm and 3.2–271 mm or custom; confirm the exact range for the required build.
  • Working and overall length: Define the contact length, total length, and any extension required.
  • Stem or core: Steel wire or wooden core can be specified according to the construction and mounting requirement.
  • Abrasive and grit: Select SiC or AO and the required grit for the workpiece and finish target.
  • Trim, density, and tolerance: Add only when they affect the bore fit or finishing result.
  • Quantity: State the required production quantity for repeat OEM or replacement orders.

Typical Industrial Applications

Honing brush assemblies are reviewed for controlled internal finishing where flexible abrasive contact is appropriate for the part and process.

  • Engine cylinder liners and machined cylindrical bores
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, valve bores, and brake components
  • Bore edges, cross-holes, and localized internal deburring
  • Controlled polishing, edge blending, and internal surface conditioning

FAQ

Is a honing brush the same as a cylinder hone tool?

A honing brush is a flexible abrasive brush assembly. This page covers custom industrial brush assemblies, not a consumer hone kit or complete power tool.

Which abrasive should be specified?

Silicon carbide and aluminum oxide are the two abrasive systems available for review. Choose the type and grit against the workpiece and required finish.

What grit sizes can be requested?

Common requested grits are #60–#600; grades up to #1200 can be reviewed for selected cylinder builds. Confirm the final grit for the selected construction and application.

Can the bore diameter and length be customized?

Yes. Diameter, working length, overall length, stem or core, and fit tolerances can be manufactured to the approved drawing.

Can you support batch production from an existing drawing?

Yes. Send the approved drawing with the abrasive, grit, dimensions, mounting detail, tolerances, and quantity for a production quotation.
